Thanks to all who participated in our last call (Friday 3/11/11 12:00pm EST). We had representatives from NIST, FEMA, NSF, USGS, NOAA, USNRC, NASA, USAID, OSTP, IRIS, UNAVCO, SCEC, EERI, GEER, and Caltech.

I have included a few items of particular note that came in over the weekend below, including version 2 of the NEIC Event Executive Summary.

*** Japan-Issued Aftershock Warning ***

Hundreds of aftershocks greater than magnitude-5 have already occurred with 30 above magnitude-6 and 1 above magnitude-7. Although most are concentrated offshore in the area that initially ruptured, there have been
others elsewhere in Japan, indicating that additional damaging quakes are possible throughout the Japanese mainland. The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) has issued the following statement on the potential for future damaging aftershocks (: http://www.jma.go.jp/jma/en/News/2011_Earthquake_01.html):
Aftershocks
- Number of strong aftershocks have occurred in the area off the coast of Iwate, Miyagi, and Ibaraki Prefectures, which is considered as the source region of the main shock. The area is so large that, when compared to past cases, the activity of aftershocks is very high.
- JMA Seismic Intensity of aftershocks will often be 5- or heavier, and it may sometimes reach 6- or 6+.
- Tsunami may occur after a strong aftershock. Be cautious when a tsunami warning or advisory is issued.
- Estimating from the occurrence of aftershock so far, the possibility of aftershocks with magnitude of 7 or higher is 70% until 10 a.m., 16 March, followed by 50% until 10 a.m., 19 March.

Call for Geospatial Data Sharing through the Japan Sendai Earthquake Data Portal: In response to the 8.9 magnitude earthquake, which struck offshore Sendai, Japan on Mar 11th 2011, the Center for Geographic Analysis at Harvard University has launched the Japan Sendai Earthquake Data Portal (http://cegrp.cga.harvard.edu/japan/) to support the exchange of geospatial datasets for relief and reconstruction efforts. The portal works best with a Firefox browser.

Potential RAPID proposal

Hi folks,
In order to get access to the raw imagery listed in the comment a few down, it sounds like we need to write a short, low $ RAPID proposal so that they will have an official avenue to set up data use agreements and the like. Some of us here at Cornell have prepared one, but Ben Phillips says that he'd prefer that the proposal be as wide as is reasonable and include multiple PI's so that NSF gets their money's worth out of the data. So, anyone else want to be included? Please email me at rbl62@cornell.edu if you are interested.

The Meteorological Agency of Japan announced the maximum acceleration at various sites as follows;
- Kurihara-machi, Miyagi Pref. 2,933 Gal
- Ohfunato, Iwate Pref. 991 Gal
- Ishinomoki-City, Miyagi Pref. 675 Gal
- Central Tokyo 259 Gal
The records are not made available. The earthquake motion lasted for two minutes in Kurihara-machi.

Attached are a few slides with images from Hashimoto et al. and other relevant references. The work by Uchida et al. nicely complements geodetic efforts to image coupling along this section of the megathrust.

Earthquake and slip deficit

A paper of interest for this earthquake is, Hashimoto et al. (2009). "Interplate seismogenic zones along the Kuril-Japan trench inferred from GPS data inversion" Nature Geosciences, 141-144. In it, they make the case that 20th century earthquakes along this section of the coast in 1936, 1938 (2), and 1978, correspond to areas of high seismic coupling. Today's earthquake appears to have ruptured through at least 3 or 4 of the zones mentioned in the paper and with a lot more slip. Overlooked in the paper, perhaps, is that there was strain accumulation along the entire coast. I'd be interested to hear from the geodetic modelers what they think in light of today's earthquake.

but it could certainly be confusing. Later in the first paragraph it talks about the microplate complexity.

Plot shows GNS earthquake locations for 1 Aug 2010 through 23 Feb 2011. Symbol sizes scaled by magnitude. Red symbols M ≥ 5. The label of horizontal axis on this version has been corrected to "longitude".
